Personal Statement

As an Assistant Professor of Neurology and the Scientific Director of the Nantz National Alzheimer Center, I have dedicated my career to the intersection of clinical practice, biomarker research, and neuropathology. My multidisciplinary background, which includes a PhD in Neuroscience, a fellowship in movement disorders, and a diploma in Health Science Statistics, uniquely positions me to investigate the complex co-pathologies that drive cognitive and movement disorders.

My research focuses on the utility of biofluid and imaging biomarkers in Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. Leveraging large-scale repositories such as ADNI, PPMI, and NACC, I have worked extensively to characterize how overlapping pathologies influence clinical progression. My experience is grounded in both the laboratory and the clinic; I have spent six years working in a brain bank and have served as site Principal Investigator for five clinical trials, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the disease from molecular signature to patient bedside.

Beyond my clinical and data expertise, I am a bilingual practitioner with a deep commitment to community engagement. I have led extensive outreach efforts within the Houston area, collaborating with organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association, AARP, and the Mexican Consulate to increase awareness and participation in NIH-sponsored research among diverse populations.

I lead the Houston ADRC Clinical Core. In this capacity, I provide the clinical and administrative oversight necessary to integrate our core missions. I lead diagnostic consensus meetings, oversee participant visits, and ensure the high-quality collection of biofluids and imaging to support the Biomarker Core and NCRAD. Furthermore, I bridge the gap between our scientific objectives and our community by working closely with the ORE Core to ensure participant retention and with the REC Core to mentor the next generation of clinical trialists.

Biography

Dr. Juan "Jon" Toledo is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute, where he serves as the Scientific Director of the Nantz National Alzheimer Center and Director of its Lewy Body Dementia Research Center of Excellence. A clinician-scientist with a focus on cognitive and movement disorders, Dr. Toledo specializes in characterizing biofluid and imaging biomarkers to better understand the co-pathologies that drive neurodegenerative diseases. His highly multidisciplinary background includes a PhD in Neuroscience focused on Parkinson’s disease neurophysiology, a fellowship in movement disorders, and a diploma in Health Science Statistics, alongside six years of foundational experience working in a brain bank.

Throughout his career, Dr. Toledo has made significant contributions to the evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias by leveraging major data repositories such as ADNI, PPMI, and NACC. As a former alumnus of IMPACT-AD and a site Principal Investigator for five clinical trials, he has extensive experience in translating complex data into clinical insights. His work is particularly focused on how overlapping pathologies in the aging brain can be identified through combined biomarker approaches to accurately assess clinical progression.

In addition to his research and clinical duties, Dr. Toledo is a bilingual English and Spanish speaker dedicated to inclusive research and community health. He has led numerous outreach initiatives in the Houston area, collaborating with the Alzheimer’s Association, AARP, and the Mexican Consulate to improve recruitment and education among diverse populations.
